Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick?em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
Last week was tough, due to several upsets no one saw coming. But it was tough for everyone, and I moved back into a two-way tie for first, so I?m very pleased. Here are my picks for week 16, with the winning team in caps.
HOUSTON TEXANS at Indianapolis Colts ? Wouldn?t it be funny if the Colts won again? Sure. But I wouldn?t bet on it actually happening. The Texans should be able to win this thing without too much trouble.
DENVER BRONCOS at Buffalo Bills ? Last week I made the mistake of picking the Bills to beat Miami. ?Why did you do that?? a friend asked. ?I wouldn?t pick the Bills for anything.? I?m going to follow my friend?s advice. Look for Denver to rebound from their drubbing at the hands of the Patriots.
Arizona Cardinals at CINCINNATI BENGALS ? Arizona is decent at home, but terrible on the road. The trend will continue this week, against a faltering Bengals team that wants to finish the season strong.
Cleveland Browns at BALTIMORE RAVENS ? Wouldn?t it be funny if the Ravens lost to this terrible Browns team? Sure. But it?s not going to happen. In fact, the Ravens should be extra angry and mean after that debacle in San Diego. Expect a merciless pounding!
Jacksonville Jaguars at TENNESSEE TITANS ? The Jaguars have picked up some quality wins of late. But this week the Titans will get their act together and beat them.
Oakland Raiders at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ? The Chiefs are a weird team. Instead of alternating wins and losses, they win and lose in streaks. After beating Green Bay, I predict that they?ll return to their winning ways, and beat the Raiders, who really should have won last week, but didn?t.
St. Louis Rams at PITTSBURGH STEELERS ? Not a fair fight.
Miami Dolphins at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS ? This could be a pretty competitive game, given Miami?s strong play of late. But the Patriots should win without too much trouble.
Minnesota Vikings at WASHINGTON REDSKINS ? The woeful Redskins will win again, thanks to this match-up against one of the league?s worst teams.
New York Giants at NEW YORK JETS ? This is a tough one to call. Both of these teams like to lose games they should win, and disappoint their fans. I?m going with the Jets here, but I have no confidence in them, and can see the Giants walking away with the win, for no good reason.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at CAROLINA PANTHERS ? The Cam Newton show will continue, when the Panthers triumph against the dreadfully disappointing Buccaneers.
San Diego Chargers at DETROIT LIONS ? Are the Chargers in the midst of another late-season push that will land them in the playoffs? God, I hope not, because I?m sick of that storyline.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES at Dallas Cowboys ? The Eagles have finally started to play like everyone thought they were capable of playing, while the Cowboys remain the Cowboys. Look for Tony Romo to do something stupid, and for Dallas to lose in the final minutes.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS at Seattle Seahawks ? The Seahawks are playing well, but are no match for a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Chicago Bears at GREEN BAY PACKERS ? The Packers lost once, and that was enough.
Atlanta Falcons at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS ? Saints QB Drew Brees is having a terrific season, and will pick up another well-earned win this week against a division rival.
Week 15 results:
Me: 9-7 (Overall 152-72)
My obnoxious friend from high school: 9-7 (Overall 145-79)
