Film Review: Hope Springs | Sassi Sam Girlie Gossip Files

Directed by: David Frankel
Written by: Vanessa Taylor
Starring: Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell
Sassi?s Star Rating: 3/5

After 31 years of marriage, the passion has fled, the separate bedrooms are permanent and Kay is just about to give up. Her husband Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) sees nothing wrong with their arrangement, but Kay (Meryl Streep) needs it to change.

She enrolls in an intensive couple counseling session in Maine and drags Arnold, kicking and screaming about the overpriced food, with her. They meet Dr. Feld (the oddly cast Steve Carell), who sets them on a path to recovery, though the road is more than a little bumpy.

Without high quality actors like Streep and Jones this would be a tough script to pull off. The majority of the film is set in Dr. Feld?s office where they talk about every detail that is making the relationship fail. The rest are scenes of the couple awkwardly trying to fondle each other.

There is humor in the rawness of their failing marriage, and Arnold?s stubbornness. Kay?s character is a little too compliant, and by the end of the film you may wish she?d grow a pair, but overall there?s enough quality to the film. Unlike many blockbusters, the reason of the rift isn?t something big like an affair; it?s simply the passage of time. It?s very real and something many couples deal with, and the unHollywood approach to this topic is refreshing in its own way.

Though the end skips a few steps, Hope Springs is a realistic view into the doldrums of their marriage, and the path to clear water.

Help Kay and Arnold rejuvenate their marriage in Hope Springs. In cinemas now!

Love
Allison

This joke isn't funny anymore, SpaceX delays ISS launch... again

Image

Stop us (oh, oh, oh stop us) if you've heard this one before (you have): SpaceX has announced that it won't be able to make that May 7th launch date. The company hasn't disclosed the cause (the static fire tests seemed to go okay) but spokesperson Kirstin Grantham said that the company is working through the "software assurance process" with NASA. A new launch window hasn't been set, but the company says it'll tell all before the end of tomorrow -- they'd better, since the ISS crew have been waiting for these space-rations since November last year.

How the original iPhone was hacked

If you've been around the iPhone scene for a while, you've no doubt already heard the story of how George "Geohot" Hotz unlocked the original iPhone for the first time, back in the summer of 2007. If not, The New Yorker, in a far broader profile, tells it again:

GameKeyboard 2.0 requires root, maps Xperia Play gamepad to all Android games

Upon its debut, the Xperia Play suffered from a lack of game titles that were compatible with its unique built-in gamepad. While the selection has improved considerably since its inception, the question remains: wouldn't it be nice if the handset supported any Android game you threw at it? Wonder no longer, because that's exactly what GameKeyboard 2.0 brings to the table. Yes, the app requires root access, but most importantly, it allows users to map on-screen touch controllers to the Xperia Play's physical gamepad. While it's slightly cumbersome to setup for the first time, anybody who has ever configured an emulator with a USB game controller will feel right at home. GameKeyboard 2.0 sells for $2.49 in the Play Store, and if you'd like a quick overview of how it all works, just hop the break for a video. Those who proceed with the download will also benefit from written instructions (for both root access and configuration) in the xda-developers forums.

[Thanks, Dreb]

Canon EOS 5D Mark III's light leak fix found to be black tape

ImageWhen Canon promised a fix for the EOS 5D Mark III's preview LCD leaking light, photographers wondered just what the "countermeasures" would be to prevent the display from affecting exposure readouts. The remedy, it turns out, is a simple patch -- of the physical kind, not software. Roger Cicala at LensRentals was brave enough to tear down one of the DSLRs shipping with a fix already in place and found black electrical tape covering the LCD area that would otherwise spill light into the exposure meter. While basic, the solution does the trick, and will no doubt be a relief to shutterbugs who want to know exactly what exposure they'll get while snapping photos in the dark.
